Snakes down a drain; Calgary zoo searching for two missing serpents

Two snakes are missing at the Calgary Zoo after slithering down a drain in their enclosure.

CALGARY — Two snakes are missing at the Calgary Zoo after slithering down a drain in their enclosure.

But zoo officials say there’s no way the creatures have made their way into the city’s sewer system.

They say it’s likely the Malagasy Giant Hognose snakes, which are not venomous, are hiding in the building’s plumbing system.

Zookeepers are working with the city to try to track the serpents down.

A review is currently being conducted of the zoo’s animal care practices after a series of animal deaths.

It was launched after a giant rodent was crushed to death in a gate before Christmas.
