Residents in parts of the Anders and Sunnybrook neighbourhoods in Red Deer were without power for a couple of hours early Thursday morning.
The City of Red Deer was notified the power was out around the intersection of 32nd Street and 40th Avenue around 6:40 a.m., said Jim Jorgensen, manager of city’s Electric, Light and Power Department.
Crews responded and found a bird had got into a four-kilovolt substation or transformer along 40th Avenue.
The bird was found dead inside the transformer.
Power was restored to the area around 8:25 a.m.
Jorgensen believes about 200 homes would have been affected.
The outage also affected the traffic lights at the intersection of 32nd Street and 40th Avenue.
A collision at the intersection occurred around 6:45 a.m., said Red Deer RCMP.
Jorgensen said he didn’t know if the accident was related to the traffic lights being out.
