DRUMHELLER — RCMP and animal cruelty officers have removed more than 340 starving horses and cattle from a ranch east of Calgary.

Police says 12 of the animals were found dead, four of the horses had to be put down, and the rest are in poor condition.

Officials with the Alberta Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals say the horses had ribs showing and had very little if any care.

The animals include about 140 horses and 200 cattle.

The surviving animals are being checked by a veterinarian.

RCMP say they have a suspect and charges are pending.
