Special Olympic athletes from across the province will descend on Red Deer next spring, competing for a chance to represent Alberta at the national Special Olympic summer games.

Red Deer will play host to the 2013 Alberta Spring Special Olympics in April.

Set to run from April 19 to 21, the weekend will feature Special Olympic athletes competing in swimming, basketball and five- and 10-pin bowling. The weekend will also include opening and closing ceremonies and a banquet.

The athletes who compete at these games can earn a chance to be a part of the Team Alberta that competes in the 2014 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in Vancouver.

Long before that weekend, there will be a kickoff this month. On Oct. 25 at 2 p.m., the Red Deer Special Olympics committee will hold an event to officially start the preparations and fundraising necessary to host the event.

Jerry Tennant, the Red Deer Special Olympics executive director, is expected to speak about the games at the kickoff. Other speakers and location for the event haven’t been finalized.
