EDMONTON — The 2011 homicide rate in Edmonton has hit number 31 after a man died from apparent stab wounds during a fight in the city’s downtown.

Police say the latest killing happened Thursday evening when two men started squabbling in an alley not far from the city’s remand centre.

The victim died in hospital while the second male is also in hospital with severe injuries.

Police are trying to determine whether the survivor was acting in self-defence.

The killing is the second in the Alberta capital in less than a week.

The 30th homicide was recorded last Sunday when a 26-year-old man died in hospital after he was shot.
