The Red Deer Stags were slow out of the gate Sunday night against their Red Deer rivals, but once they got going the Riggers couldn’t stop them.

The Stags scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to come back from three runs down to take the senior AAA Sunburst Baseball League game 12-8 at Great Chief Park.

The Stags got their chance to come back after Davin Gulbransen came in to pitch in the seventh inning trailing 8-5 and shut down the Riggers the rest of the way — surrendering just one hit.

Josh Edwards started for the Stags and gave up eight runs on 10 hits and three walks while striking out three over 6 1/3 innings of work.

Byron Whitford keyed the big eighth inning with a three-run home run and knocked in four runs overall. Jason Fraser also had a solo homer in the sixth for the Stags, while Kevin Curran went two-for-five at the plate and Dan Zinger went two-for-three with an RBI double.

James Dykstra took the loss for the Riggers after pitching into the eighth and getting knocked around for 10 runs.

Delton Kruk went three-for-five with three RBI for the Riggers, while Jason Chatwood was three-for-five with one RBI and Joel Peterman one-for-five with two RBI with a double in the seventh.

For the Stags, it was their second consecutive victory after opening the season 0-3. The Stags knocked off the visiting Fort Saskatchewan Athletics 3-1 Saturday night.
