Shayne Steffen beat out four other candidates to win a seat on Ponoka town council in a byelection.

The agricultural fieldman with Ponoka County picked up 164 votes in the Dec. 14 byelection. James Nakoneshny followed with 115 votes; next were Jerry Siemens (110), Fred Calkins (101) and Julian Hudson (12).

Siemens is a former town councillor, and Nakoneshny and Hudson ran unsuccessfully in the October 2010 municipal election.

The byelection was called to fill a vacancy left when first-time councillor Beva Hamilton, 57, lost her battle with cancer and died in October.
