Stelmach defends oilsands pipeline in letter to U.S. government

EDMONTON — Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach is defending a proposed oilsands pipeline that is getting bashed by critics on both sides of the border.

EDMONTON — Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach is defending a proposed oilsands pipeline that is getting bashed by critics on both sides of the border.

Stelmach has written a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in support of the proposed $12 billion Keystone XL project.

The pipeline would carry bitumen from Alberta straight to the U.S.

In the letter Stelmach says the U.S. needs secure supplies of oil and natural gas.

He also says it is important that the supplies come from jurisdictions such as Alberta that take their environmental responsibilities seriously.

The letter comes after up to 50 U.S. congressmen sent their own letter to Clinton expressing environmental concerns about Alberta’s oilsands and the pipeline.
