Stelmach keen to meet filmmaker James Cameron about oilsands

EDMONTON — Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach says even though he hasn’t heard from Hollywood filmmaker James Cameron, he’s still holding his calendar open to meet with him next week about the oilsands.

Cameron, director of heavyweight films such as “Titanic” and “Avatar,” sent a letter to Stelmach’s office earlier this month saying he plans to tour the oilsands next week.

He asked to meet with Stelmach in Edmonton for two hours on Sept. 29.

Stelmach spokesman Jerry Bellikka says the premier’s office has left a message for Cameron but hasn’t heard back.

Stelmach says he doesn’t consider the lack of a reply high-handed by Cameron, and adds he’s ready to meet with whomever he can about the oilsands.

Greenpeace and other environmental groups have been demonizing the industry as a global menace.
