Stelmach reiterates opposition to tax

For the second time in recent days, outgoing Premier Ed Stelmach has warned about the introduction of a provincial sales tax in Alberta.

EDMONTON — For the second time in recent days, outgoing Premier Ed Stelmach has warned about the introduction of a provincial sales tax in Alberta.

His recent statements have come up even though no one is currently pitching the idea, at least not publicly.

At an event in Edmonton on Wednesday, Stelmach told the crowd: “Keep your eyes focused on whoever is talking about the sales tax.”

He says Albertans have always been proud of two things: no sales tax and no “four-legged rats.”

Stelmach did not make it clear who to keep an eye on.

Ted Morton, who recently announced his resignation as the finance minister to take a run at the race to replace Stelmach, has never completely ruled out a provincial sales tax, saying all options should be discussed.

Stelmach has always maintained a sales tax would not come while he was premier.

“I don’t support a sales tax,” he said. “Why would you want to talk about changing tax structure when we are coming out of economic recovery? Our economy is leading.”
