Stelmach says health scandal should be put to bed

EDMONTON — Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach says it’s time to move on from unproven allegations of corruption at the highest levels of the health system.

EDMONTON — Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach says it’s time to move on from unproven allegations of corruption at the highest levels of the health system.

Stelmach notes that critic Raj Sherman has promised for a week to provide evidence of his allegations but has been unable to do so.

Stelmach says he won’t call a public inquiry because there’s nothing on which to pin a probe.

Sherman, who sits as an Independent, told the house last week that Edmonton health officials covered up 250 deaths, bribed doctors to keep it quiet and kept two sets of books to hide the hush money.

Sherman, who is also an ER doctor, suggested that Iris Evans, who was the health minister at the time, was involved.

Stelmach and Evans say they won’t pursue censure of Sherman in the legislature because they’ve already made their points publicly.
