CALGARY — High winds and thunderstorms uprooted trees, knocked out power, ripped shingles off roofs and knocked down part of a movie theatre in Alberta.

The storms hit Calgary, Strathmore and Cold Lake in northeastern Alberta on Sunday.

Dozens of people escaped serious injury when strong winds blew down a section of the wall of the Joyland Theatre in Strathmore, about 50 kilometres east of Calgary.

The nearly 100-year-old wall collapsed at around 2 p.m. while people were inside watching a movie.

In Calgary, high winds knocked down trees and cut power to thousands of residents.

Heavy rain and hail hit Cold Lake around supper time on Sunday, ripping off shingles from roofs, knocking down trees and even throwing trampoline on top of a home.

Officials in Cold Lake say about 100 homes were affected by the severe weather.

There were no reports of injuries.
