For more than 12 hours police were at a standstill with a man who had barricaded himself in a Strathmore residence.

For more than 12 hours police were at a standstill with a man who had barricaded himself in a Strathmore residence.

But by about 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon, Strathmore RCMP, with the assistance of both the north and south Emergency Response Teams and RCMP negotiators, were able to talk the armed and barricaded man out of his residence where he was arrested.

At 1:30 a.m. Sunday Strathmore RCMP were called to an incident involving a female victim. An investigation led police to believe a male suspect had returned to his residence in Strathmore.

Police attempted to arrest the man, but threats were made. Taking these threats into account, officers determined, to ensure the safety of all those involved, to call for negotiators and the assistance of the Emergency Response Team. Members of the RCMP, Alberta Sherrifs and Community Peace Officers assisted in containing the scene during the standoff.

As a result of the incident several residents of nearby homes were asked to leave their residences and Strathmore RCMP are thankful for their assistance and cooperation. Police are also pleased this matter was resolved with the safe arrest of the suspect.

Police are not releasing the name of the man at this time.
