A former Lacombe high school graduate has been named the second place winner in a national Remembrance Day poetry competition.

Kelsey Adler, who graduated in June from Lacombe Composite High School, was named the runner-up in the Royal Canadian Legion Dominion competition for her work called Through a Child’s Eyes.

Adler, who now attends the University of Alberta working for a combined degree in arts and education, first entered her poem at the Lacombe Legion in 2010. It was then selected for the provincial-level competition.

She won first place in the Alberta-Northwest Territories Command 2011 senior poem competition.

Adler said earlier she was encouraged by a teacher to submit a poem.

Earlier this month, she read her poem at the Alberta legislature during a service of remembrance.

She said earlier she drew inspiration for her work from the stories her grandfather used to tell her about what it was like to grow up during a time of war.
