Sutter Fund Chiefs shoot out the lights

The Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs went on a scoring spree in Alberta Major Female Hockey League play during the weekend, downing the Highwood Raiders 5-0 in High River Saturday and the Calgary Chaos 9-1 at Kin City Arenas Sunday.

Jennifer West turned aside 15 shots to pick up the shutout Saturday while Suze Vanderlinde scored twice and Reanna Arnold, Krista Wilson and Ashley Graf connected once each.

Jade Petrie and Graf had two goals and three assists each against the Chaos while Emily Lougheed added two goals and two helpers. Arnold scored twice and Shelby Schlosser once.

Megan Kirkland made 14 saves in goal while her mates had 39 shots.

The Chiefs face the Chaos in Calgary Saturday while they host Highwood Sunday at 12:45 p.m. at Kin City.

Major Bantam Girls

Breanna Martin scored the only goal in a losing cause as the Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs fell 3-1 to the host Calgary Rangers.

Christina Boulton made 21 saves for the Chiefs. Darryl LaPlante sniped two goals as the Bentley Generals opened their Chinook Hockey League regular season Saturday with a 5-1 win over the Carstairs Redhawks at Lacombe.

Pete Vandermeer, Scott Kalinchuk and Joe Vandermeer also scored for the Generals. Dan Shermerhorn had the lone goal for the Redhawks, a new entry in the CHL this year.

Bentley netminder Scott Galenza made 27 saves. Jason Kipling blocked 43 shots for Carstairs, which trailed 2-1 after the opening period and 3-1 heading into the final frame.

The clubs split eight minor penalties.
