Sylvan Lake council wants second look at plans for retaining wall

Sylvan Lake town council has held off awarding a $2.3 million contract to continue construction of a promenade and other features in the lakeshore area to take another look at the plans.

Sylvan Lake town council has held off awarding a $2.3 million contract to continue construction of a promenade and other features in the lakeshore area to take another look at the plans.

Mayor Susan Samson said council wants more information about plans to build a retaining wall between the promenade and the provincial park below at the east end of Lakeshore Drive between 40th and 33rd Street.

There’s some question whether the wall needs to be as long as proposed, she said in an interview on Wednesday.

“That has gone back to administration to have another look at,” said Samson. The proposed retaining wall would have stretched from about 38th Street to 34th Street.

The town’s consultant for the Lakeshore Drive redevelopment project had recommended awarding the tender of $2.295 million from Spruce Grove’s SG Landscaping Ltd., the lowest of two tenders. The other tender was nearly $3.2 million.

Meanwhile, a separate tender for canopies and shelters in Centennial Park was rejected by council.

“The tender came in much higher than expected and we only got one tender,” said Samson. “We didn’t budget that kind of money for those canopies.”

Budgeted at $120,000, the project to install canopies over drop-off areas and build shelters over seating areas drew a tender of $422,903.

Samson said council will take another look at that project later and see if the project can be modified.

This is the fourth year of construction along Sylvan Lake’s waterfront, which is being turned into a more pedestrian-friendly environment by building a promenade and extending Centennial Park up the water’s edge.

Also planned this year, is the redesign of a parking lot at the southeast corner of 44th Street and 50A Avenue to add extra stalls. The town also plans to upgrade 40th Street between 50A Avenue and 50th Avenue with gutters, sidewalks and street lighting.

The cost of all this year’s work is pegged at close to $4.2 million.
