The cause of a Monday fire at a vacant Sylvan Lake hotel remains under investigation.

Sylvan Lake volunteer fire department was called to the former Sylvan Lake Inn and Resort at the east end of Lakeshore Drive about 6 p.m.

“Upon extinguishing the fire, some evidence was located suggesting that the fire may have been purposely set,” says a release from Sylvan Lake RCMP Cpl. Kevin Halwa. Details on what was found have not been released.

“The extent of the damage to the building as a result of the fire is unknown at this time.”

The hotel has been mostly vacant for several months although an attached restaurant is still operating. Sylvan Lake fire department and provincial fire investigators are continuing to probe the cause of the blaze.
