Sylvan Lake town council has approved first reading of a rezoning bylaw to make way for a new school in the Beacon Hill neighbourhood.

The province announced a new $15-million elementary school for Sylvan Lake in February. It will be in Chinook’s Edge School Division and is expected to be completed in 2016.

The planned kindergarten to Grade 8 school would add capacity for 500 students to the Central Alberta community.

The school will be the first kindergarten to Grade 8 school in Sylvan Lake, which has two kindergarten to Grade 5 schools, one Grade 6 to 8 school and one high school, as well as the career high school.
