Heavy rain was a factor in a tanker truck rollover near Rimbey that closed Hwy 771 for most of Monday. The male driver of the Northwest Tank Lines truck was pulling two tanks full of fuel northbound on the highway towards the Rimbey Gas Plant. The wheels veered off the narrow shoulder and the truck rolled into the ditch around 11:30 a.m., said Const. Matthew Bentz with Rimbey RCMP. “He got too close to the shoulder and the soft ground kind of sucked him into the ditch,” he said. Fuel never leaked from the tanks that dislodged and took out a fence and some trees. The driver only suffered a sore hip and was treated on scene by Rimbey EMS. The Rimbey Fire Department also responded. The highway, which leads to the gas plant, was closed from Hwy 53 to Township Road 432 as crews worked to remove the truck. LPGERC Emergency Response brought in units to empty the fuel from the tanks and to remove the vehicle. Alberta Highway was to oversee the final cleanup. Bentz believed Hwy 771 would be closed until midnight. No charges were laid.
