Third-term Red Deer city Coun. Tara Veer confirmed her plans to run for mayor in late August.

“I feel ready for a new mandate,” said Veer. “I have a great vision and I want to be able to work with the people of Red Deer and for me to be able to accomplish what I hope to accomplish with and for the people of Red Deer, I need a new mandate and a new level of authority to do that.”

Veer said something transpired within her when she was walking along the parade route in 2012. She said it came to her that “her life’s purpose was to serve the people of Red Deer.”

Veer was first elected to council in 2004. She is a past executive director and director of Children’s Ministry for Living Stones Church. Veer sits on various council committees, including the audit committee, the Community Housing Advisory Board, and the governance and policy committee. She is active in the community, serving as a volunteer for various groups and boards. She has a degree in sociology with a concentration in criminology from Red Deer College/Queen’s University.
