EDMONTON — Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach is downplaying a very unflattering article published in the latest edition of The Economist.

The London-based publication describes Stelmach as the least popular premier in Canada even though his Tory party holds 68 of Alberta’s 83 seats.

In response to the article, Stelmach says he believes his Progressive Conservative government is “on the right track.”

The premier says he doesn’t want news articles about him to alter his government’s plans, so he refused further comment.

The Economist article focuses on how the fledgling Wildrose Alliance Party has surged past Stelmach’s Tories in recent polls.

The influential magazine says Stelmach appears threatened by Wildrose Alliance and his Tories are now leaning further right with some of their policies.
