TABER — There was increased security Wednesday at an Alberta high school where a student was fatally shot by another student in 1999 after a threat was found in one of the washrooms.
The message, which wasn’t specifically directed at anyone, was found at W.R. Myers around 3 p.m. Police would only say it indicated someone intended to do harm there Wednesday.
School officials and Taber police decided to keep the school open with a number of precautions in place, including closing all but the main doors, having students leave their backpacks at the front doors and having them leave their coats in their lockers.
Jason Lang, 17, was killed during a shooting rampage by a 14-year-old schoolmate at W.R. Myers in April 1999.
The dead boy’s father, Rev. Dale Lang, said he was disappointed to hear of another incident at the school.
“It’s always a disturbing thing,” he said. “But for me, because I’ve had to deal with the issue of our son’s death and talked about it a lot, it’s not something that is really jolting to me as it once was.
His son’s killer, who was convicted of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder under provisions covering young offenders, is now 23.
