EDMONTON — A chemical scare at the University of Alberta forced students and staff to evacuate a student residence and the school’s largest library for about two hours.

It began after fire crews were called around 10 a.m. to a report of an unconscious person and a chemical release in one of the dorm rooms on the upper floors of the HUB mall shopping complex.

The complex is linked by an above-ground pedestrian walkway to the Rutherford Library.

Students and staff were notified by alarms, cellphones and text messages to leave the area.

Tim Wilson, an emergency services spokesman, says the person in the dorm room was found dead and subsequent meter readings found no trace of harmful chemicals in the air.

Police are investigating, but say the death appears to be non-criminal.
