CALGARY — Hail, sleet and wet snow are being blamed for a highway crash in southern Alberta that left three people dead and two others in hospital Sunday morning.

Three men in a passenger van were killed when their vehicle collided with a truck travelling in the opposition direction on Highway 22 near Crowsnest Pass.

The two men in the truck were transferred to a Calgary hospital, but police said their injuries were not life-threatening.

William Desjardins, 60, and James Hutchinson, 46, of Fernie, B.C. were killed in the crash along with Darrel Johnston, 52, of Crowsnest Pass.

Witnesses say the road was covered with slush and ice at the time of the fatal crash and the temperature was hovering just above freezing.

An RCMP collision analyst attended the crash site and police say they’re continuing their investigation.
