The Red Deer crew, consisting also of third Harvey Kelts, second Rick Hjertaas and lead Eldon Raab, defeated favoured Ontario 6-2 in the final of the National Dominion Club Curling Championship which concluded Saturday in Richmond, B.C.

The Dominion Championship is the largest curling competition in the world with over 10,000 curlers from 500 Canadian clubs entering the playdowns on an annual basis.

The Red Deer foursome was undefeated during the Alberta playdowns, racking up 14 wins in the club, southern and provincial finals.

Thurber and his supporting cast lost just once at the national finals in Richmond — falling 6-2 to B.C. — but finished on top of their pool and then struck for three points in the eighth end to defeat Newfoundland 7-6 in a semifinal.
