Toddler dead after parking lot collision in Edmonton

A toddler who bolted from her mother and into the path of an oncoming vehicle has become Edmonton’s 15th traffic fatality of the year.

EDMONTON — A toddler who bolted from her mother and into the path of an oncoming vehicle has become Edmonton’s 15th traffic fatality of the year.

Police say the 14-month-old girl was walking with her mom in the parking lot of a south-end condo complex early Wednesday evening.

They say the child was fatally injured when she suddenly darted in front of a sport utility vehicle.

She died in hospital.

Investigators say the girl was so small and moved so quickly that the driver couldn’t stop in time to prevent hitting her.

Alcohol and speed were not factors and police do not expect to lay charges.
