Tories promise free insulin pumps for Type 1 diabetes patients

The Alberta Progressive Conservatives are promising to do more to help people who suffer from Type 1 diabetes.

EDMONTON — The Alberta Progressive Conservatives are promising to do more to help people who suffer from Type 1 diabetes.

Premier Alison Redford says if the Tories win the April 23 election the government will give people with this form of diabetes free insulin pumps.

Redford says helping people manage the disease could reduce long-term health complications including kidney failure, heart attack and strokes.

About 30,000 Albertans have Type 1 diabetes.

The cost of the insulin pumps is estimated at $8.6 million.

The Canadian Diabetes Association says Alberta has the highest rate of the disease in the country.
