Towns recognized for health efforts

A handful of Central Alberta communities were among 34 recognized for fostering healthier lifestyles for residents.

A handful of Central Alberta communities were among 34 recognized for fostering healthier lifestyles for residents.

Communities ChooseWell applauded the recipients for their efforts to promote and enable physical activity and healthy eating for citizens throughout 2011. The City of Lacombe was honoured in the category of reducing barriers to healthy living for tweens and teens.

The Town of Ponoka was recognized in the category of creating healthy options.

And the Village of Cremona and Water Valley was honoured as an overall high achiever as well as being recognized in the building community resources through partnership category.

Communities ChooseWell recipients were selected by adjudicators representing recreation, health and wellness, related community organizations and health professionals.

Each community will receive a formal award, and overall high achievers will also receive $2,000 to support future healthy living initiatives in their community.

A celebration will be held for Northern Alberta recipients in Morinville on Thursday and for Southern Alberta recipients in Okotoks on Nov. 24.
