Towns vie to hold concert

Two Central Alberta communities are finalists in a contest to host a country music concert.

The Small Town Saturday Night contest hosted by the Big Valley Jamboree and Travel Alberta has narrowed the finalists down to 10 communities, including Bashaw and Stettler.

The communities will have a chance to host a mini-Big Valley Jamboree concert on April 28. Performers for the concert include Dean Brody, Aaron Lines, Duane Steele and Tim Hus.

Small towns were invited to showcase their passion by sending in a video about their community. The videos are now available to view on the Big Valley Jamboree website and Albertans are asked to visit and vote for their favourite.

“This contest is a great opportunity to shine a spotlight on Alberta’s vibrant rural communities,” said Jack Hayden, minister of Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation, on the website. “We’re thrilled with the videos created and we’re excited to find out which community Albertans will vote for.”

Voting opened at noon on Tuesday and closes at midnight on March 20.

The winning community will be announced at the Growing Rural Tourism Conference in Camrose on April 3.

Other communities chosen as finalists are Bonnyville, Black Diamond, Cold Lake, Crowsnest Pass, Devon, High River, Legal and Plamondon.
