Alberta Premier Alison Redford says the province needs to act faster on twinning Highway 63.
Last Friday, seven people were killed in a head-on crash on the two-lane highway, which is the only way into and out of Fort McMurray.
Redford said Wednesday that she was saddened about what happened. She says in the current capital plan, it was always planned to have at least 50 per cent of the highway twinned within three years.
Redford says she will ask the transportation minister, after cabinet is sworn in, to make twinning Highway 63 a priority.
“Highway 63 is a unique road in this province. It is busy and there are safety issues on the road. Of course we know there are challenges with respect to construction.
“I have asked our department to take a look at what an accelerated schedule would look like. I think it’s a priority to move ahead with that.”
