A clemency hearing has been set in Montana for the only Canadian on death row in the United States.
Two days have been set aside for the hearing into the fate of Ronald Smith, a former resident of Red Deer.
Smith will appear before the Board of Pardons and Parole on May 2 and May 3 in Deer Lodge, Mont.
He has been on death row for the murders of Thomas Running Rabbit and Harvey Mad Man 30 years ago near East Glacier, Mont.
Smith’s lawyer, Greg Jackson, says the application will be conducted as a parole hearing with witness testimony being submitted but not subject to cross examination.
The board will make a recommendation but the final decision will fall into the hands of Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer.
