Two dead, one hurt in explosion in garage at Edmonton home

Two people are dead and another is in hospital after an explosion and fire in the garage of an Edmonton home.

EDMONTON — Two people are dead and another is in hospital after an explosion and fire in the garage of an Edmonton home.

Fire crews were called to reports of a blast at the detached structure on Monday evening.

Shauna Skrepnyk, who lives across the street, says some of the sparks were flying over her garage and neighbours’ trees.

She says the sight of all the billowing smoke was “gut-wrenching, heartbreaking to see.”

The 26 firefighters who battled the blaze managed to contain it to the garage.

District Chief Dennis Hushagen says crews found the two deceased in the garage once they got the flames under control, while a third individual was taken to hospital with burns.

Police and fire investigators are now looking into what caused the fire.
