REGINA — Police had to rescue two children who were left inside a sweltering car in a mall parking lot in Regina.

A passerby noticed a baby and a five-year-old in an unlocked car in the Golden Mile Shopping Centre parking lot at around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

The vehicle wasn’t running and the two young children were showing signs of heat distress when police responded and rescued them.

Witnesses say they were in the vehicle for at least a half hour.

Environment Canada said the temperature in Regina was 31 C at the time.

Police say the parent was located in the mall and let off with a warning.

“It’s inexcusable,” said Candace Curle, who called 911.

“I have four little kids, I know what it’s like to not want to drag them in. But on a hot day ... you don’t have another choice.”

Two weeks ago, an Edmonton man was charged with child abandonment after his two-year-old son was discovered in the back seat of a vehicle.
