EDMONTON — The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees says a fourth guard involved in job action earlier this year at an Edmonton-area jail has been fired.
The dismissal comes after three other guards who worked at the Fort Saskatchewan Correctional Centre, northeast of the city, were dismissed over the summer.
The job action, which spanned five days, started April 26 when guards at the Edmonton Remand Centre refused to report for duty over health and safety concerns at the new facility.
It then spread to other worksites around Alberta.
Guy Smith, president of the AUPE, says in a release that the dismissal is a betrayal of a provincial government promise not to seek retribution against members who took part in the strike.
