Unusual diving death in Mexico has Calgary woman’s family in shock

Relatives of a Calgary woman who died while scuba diving in Mexico say they are having a difficult time dealing with what they call her “unusual” death.

CALGARY — Relatives of a Calgary woman who died while scuba diving in Mexico say they are having a difficult time dealing with what they call her “unusual” death.

Ronda Cross, who was 41, died on the weekend in Cabo San Lucas.

She was diving with her cousin, who was a beginner.

Family members say there was a problem with Cross’s tanks and she was overcome by carbon monoxide.

They say she was experienced and had more than 200 dives to her credit.

They also say there was nothing out of the ordinary about the dive that would have challenged Cross.

“They weren’t going to do anything too hair-raising or risk-taking,” said father-in-law Dennis Cross. “We just found out that the death was caused by carbon monoxide in the tanks. I’m just outraged.”

The family is having difficulty coping, he said.

“We’re just trying to wrap our minds around it, because it’s just so hard to fathom that this has happened. It’s so unusual. I guess we’re going to have to take it a day at a time and see where we go.”

Mexican police are investigating and have shut down the company and seized the tanks as evidence, relatives say.

Cross’s husband, Colin, is urging people who go out on the water in foreign countries to make sure to test their tanks and ensure a company is reputable before diving with it.
