Vipers advance to North final

The Red Deer Vipers are through to the Heritage Junior B Hockey League North Division final.

The Vipers earned a date with the Blackfalds Wranglers with a 3-0 win over the host Stettler Lightning on Sunday, a victory that allowed them to take the best-of-five semifinal set in four games.

David Foord sniped the only goal the Vipers needed in the second period. Joel Pelletier also scored in the middle frame and Troy Klaus added an empty-net tally at 18:01 of the third period.

Jason Pohl made 21 saves for the shutout, while the Vipers fired 52 shots at Lightning netminder Simon Thieleman.

Red Deer took a 2-1 series lead with a 7-0 win on Saturday at the Arena, where Klaus scored twice and Cullyn Dunham, Stephen Pietsch, Ryan Traynor, Matt Belich and Kolton Gillett chipped in with single goals.

Pohl posted the shutout with a 24-save outing and Landon Schmidt blocked 58 shots for the Lightning. The Vipers were assessed eight of 13 minor penalties and one of two fighting majors.

The Wranglers, who will host the Vipers on Tuesday, downed the visiting Ponoka Stampeders 5-2 on Saturday to complete a sweep of the other North semifinal.

Riley Hansen and Kyle Maas each sniped two goals for the Wranglers, who got a single from Jason Bell. Jordan Duthie and Jared Kambeitz replied for the Stamps.

Blackfalds netminder Layne Swier made 24 saves, while Garret Mountour stopped 41 shots for Ponoka. The Stampeders were assessed seven of 13 minor penalties and one of two majors.

The Wranglers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the series with an 8-2 triumph at home on Friday. Maas, Bell and Greg Gross each tallied twice for the winners, while Chance Abbott and Brodie Lutz also scored and Tanner Schalin blocked 30 shots.

Anthony Pickering and Brandon Tebb replied for the Stamps, who got a 33-save performance from Montour. The teams split six minor penalties.

Elsewhere, the Three Hills Thrashers are headed to a fifth and deciding game in their Central Division semifinal with the Airdrie Thunder.

The host Thunder square the series at two games apiece with a 3-1 win Sunday at Three Hills. Tyrel Severtson scored the lone goal for the Thrashers, who held a 36-35 edge in shots while getting a 32-save effort from Devon Dell.

The Thunder, who trailed 2-0 earlier in the series, defeated the Thrashers 4-2 on Friday at Three Hills. Scoring in a losing cause were Severtson and Jesse Scheunert.

Dell made 36 saves, while Thunder netminder Logan Marlow stopped 48 shots.

Game 5 in the series goes tonight at 8 p.m. at Three Hills.
