EDMONTON — There aren’t many shopping malls where a life-size whale can be beached to make room for bra shoppers.
But that’s the story at West Edmonton Mall, where the faux fish has been removed to install more seating outside a lingerie shop due to open in August.
“Let’s face it, there will be men and kids that will be waiting,” explained mall spokeswoman Sheri Clegg, who said seating was needed for them as they wait for their girlfriends, wives or moms to shop.
But she promised the whale, a fixture at the mall since 1983, will be back. A restoration of the sculpture is in the works before it is relocated to an undetermined location in the mall.
“The whale has always been a landmark within the mall itself,” said Clegg.
“We are asking people to keep their eyes open for it.”
A Facebook group has even popped up in honour of the whale. Members have posted pictures of themselves inside the mouth of the famous mammal.
