Watermain breaks in Edmonton

EDMONTON — A woman needed treatment for frostbite when she became trapped in her vehicle by a watermain break that covered a five-square block area of Edmonton.

The woman was taken to hospital after her rescue in the wake of the Sunday morning drenching that froze vehicles in place and flooded seven row houses.

Firefighters who responded to the scene had to deal with hip-deep water in some spots on the streets.

At least half a dozen people were removed from their homes on an inflatable boat and taken to a cultural centre that acted as an emergency shelter.

Some of the homeowners say the water was about a metre high in their basements and was enough to ruin many of their appliances.

The break happened in a main water transmission line, but a spokeswoman for the Epcor utility says the cause of it is not clear.
