Westerner Park plans more environmental initiatives

The folks at Westerner Park are continuing to think green.

Since introducing the Green Up the Park energy saving retrofit program in 2005, Westerner Park has replaced all 1,438 light fixtures, seven rooftop air-conditioning/intake units and two boilers with new energy efficient fixtures.

The new boilers are expected to provide about $10,000 of savings per year, due to increased efficiency and reduced maintenance costs.

Since more environmentally friendly light fixtures use up to 45 per cent less energy, they are expected to provide a return on their investment in 18 months to five years.

“Westerner Park has made great strides towards greening up the park over the past eight years,” said assistant general manager Jim White. “The ongoing challenges we face . . . is keeping up with technology as improvements become available, and finding the funding to make those improvements.”

Future retrofit projects include replacing the four Centrium boilers used for the Zamboni, washrooms, showers and concessions, with two energy efficient units.
