Wildrose leader says she would remove Alberta’s Asian envoy from his post

If the Wildrose party forms government in the April 23 election, Gary Mar is out as Alberta’s trade envoy to Asia.

EDMONTON — If the Wildrose party forms government in the April 23 election, Gary Mar is out as Alberta’s trade envoy to Asia.

Wildrose leader Danielle Smith says Mar would not be returning to Hong Kong because her government would be conducting a wide-ranging review of all trade offices.

Smith says the information she has received so far is that the Asia offices are not delivering any bang for the buck.

Mar, a former Tory cabinet minister, is currently in administrative limbo.

He is on unpaid leave while a government official investigates whether he tried to sell access to Asian officials in return for help paying off his campaign debts.

Mar lost the Progressive Conservative party leadership race to Premier Alison Redford last fall.
