William Shatner to direct, executive produce a life-story documentary

The life of Canadian actor William Shatner will be the focus of a feature-length documentary bound for Movie Central.

BANFF — The life of Canadian actor William Shatner will be the focus of a feature-length documentary bound for Movie Central.

The premium movie channel says it has partnered with Shatner’s production company Melis Productions and Ballinran Productions Limited on a film tentatively titled, “The Captains.”

Movie Central says the movie will trace Shatner’s extensive career from its earliest days in Montreal and Stratford, Ont., and delve into his “serendipitous” casting as Capt. James T. Kirk on “Star Trek.”

The film is scheduled to start production in July for broadcast in winter 2011.

The film will be directed by Shatner, who will also co-executive produce.

Movie Central announced the project at the Banff World Television Festival, where Shatner was to be presented with a lifetime achievement award.

This fall, Movie Central is also set to air the documentary, “William Shatner’s Gonzo Ballet,” about choreographer Margo Sappington’s journey to create a ballet set to the music of Shatner’s album “Has Been.”
