CALGARY —A couple of major streets in downtown Calgary have been closed due to wind hazards.

Fire department officials say the measure was taken after a piece of debris off a high-rise building reportedly struck two vehicles on Tuesday.

In addition, a metal-framed canvass had come loose on the Husky Oil building.

A high-angle team from the fire department was brought in to assess the risk, but the winds proved too strong for them to scale the building.

They are set to try again on Wednesday morning.

High winds have created havoc in downtown Calgary before.

Last November, windows were blown out of skyscrapers and transit train service was knocked out during a wind storm.

And in 2009, a three-year-old girl was killed by falling debris from a construction site atop a high-rise building.
