Winnipeg woman who preyed on teen prostitute escapes extra jail time

A Winnipeg woman who took money from a 14-year-old girl involved in the sex trade has escaped further jail time.

WINNIPEG — A Winnipeg woman who took money from a 14-year-old girl involved in the sex trade has escaped further jail time.

A judge has given Peggy Doreen Melquist a six-month sentence for living off the avails of prostitution and running a common bawdy house.

The Crown and defence recommended the sentence, but the double credit Melquist gets for the three months she was in custody following her arrest means she will not spend any further time behind bars.

Melquist pleaded guilty Monday to sexually exploiting the teenager in her home.

Court of Queen’s Bench Judge Robert Dewar acknowledges that the Crown had a difficult case after the girl involved in the matter died.

The teen’s mother stormed out of the sentencing hearing after telling the court that she’s angry with Melquist.
