Environment Canada has issued winter storm warnings for an area stretching from Ponoka to the U.S. border.

The forecast is calling for up to 40 centimetres of snow around Lethbridge, with extremely poor visibility due to strong gusting winds of up to 70 km/hr.

At the Calgary International Airport, at least 17 departures are grounded and more than 30 flights scheduled to arrive Wednesday night have been cancelled.

RCMP are not recommending travel on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway because of poor visibility, drifting snow and snow-covered lanes.

Calgary’s Emergency Management Agency is working with the city’s services to ensure the city is prepared for the storm.

The roads department is laying down salt and calcium chloride in an effort to stop the roads from freezing up.

River flows are also being monitored but officials say they don’t expect any flooding.
