Police are looking for witnesses who saw a brutal beating in downtown Red Deer early Sunday morning.

RCMP said patrolling officers were flagged down by security at The Gents Club at 4620 50th Ave. about 2:30 a.m. after a man was found injured outside.

Witnesses said the man had been attacked outside the bar after he came to the aid of a homeless man who was being harassed by five men.

The injured man asked the five to leave the man alone and they turned on him and badly beat him. Witnesses said he was kicked in the head several times.

The victim was taken by ambulance to hospital with a concussion, bruises and cuts requiring stitches.

All five suspects left in a taxi before police arrived.

Most of the witnesses had also left because of the extreme cold. Police are reviewing surveillance video from the bars and working with taxi companies to identify the culprits.

Two of the suspects are described as black and a third as aboriginal.

Police are asking any witnesses to come forward and call police at 403-343-5575 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Anonymous tips can also be made online at www.tipsubmit.com.
