EDMONTON — A woman who jumped from a moving Edmonton taxi, possibly to avoid paying the fare, is fighting for her life after suffering critical head injuries.

The woman, believed to be in her 30s, leaped from the back seat of the cab and struck the ground head first late Wednesday afternoon.

Police say the vehicle was going about 40 kilometres an hour when the driver heard the door open and looked in the mirror to see the woman jump out in a southwest neighbourhood.

She was bleeding from her head and appeared stunned as she was helped by passersby before an ambulance arrived.

Her condition is listed as critical and unstable.

While police believe the fare may have been the reason for the woman’s actions, they say other issues may have been at play.
