SURPRISE, Ariz. — Police in a small Arizona community have found the body of a woman matching the description of an Edmontonian reported missing by her family.

Leslie Widynowski, 63, and husband Ken have spent the last four winters in Surprise, Ariz., a suburb of Phoenix.

Last Wednesday, Ken came home from golfing and figured his wife had just popped out to the store, but when she hadn’t returned by 6 p.m., he called police.

An aerial search by helicopter and a ground search of medical facilities as well as homeless and women’s shelters failed to turn up leads, as have flyers plastered in her Arizona community.

On Sunday afternoon, Widynowski’s vehicle was found just outside of Surprise in a rural area, said Sgt. Bert Anzini.

He said the vehicle was unoccupied and locked. Officers searched the area.

“A search of the area found a body of a female subject and it does match the description of Ms. Widynowski,” Anzini said.

“The vehicle was parked at the edge of a paved road just as it becomes road in a desert wash area, immediately adjacent to a manufactured community.”

The body was in a small ravine about two metres deep. Police say there was no evidence of trauma that would indicate foul play.

An autopsy is being done to determine cause of death.
