EDMONTON — Alberta safety officers are investigating the death of a worker who fell at Syncrude Canada’s Mildred Lake oilsands project.

Officials say the 60-year-old employee was working on scaffolding Wednesday morning when he fell about 7 metres into a duct.

Emergency medical staff declared him dead at the scene.

Barrie Harrison of Alberta Occupational Health says work on part of the project has been halted as investigators try to determine what happened, including whether the man was wearing a safety harness.

The identity of the man and where he is from was not released.

He was an employee of Jacobs Industrial Services, a company that does contract work for Syncrude.
