FORT MCMURRAY — Workers at an oilsands project in northern Alberta are paying close attention to the progress of a forest fire that’s burning nearby.

The fire began Saturday and is about 13 kilometres away from Fire Bag -- a Suncor Energy site.

Fire Bag is about 50 kilometres northeast of Fort McMurray. RCMP say the blaze was sparked by lightening and had grown to about 1,800 hectares by 9:30 Saturday evening.

Winds have been pushing the fire towards the Saskatchewan and Northwest Territory boundaries, away from Fire Bag.

Police say employees living at Fire Bag are not in danger, but that resources are ready to evacuate the site if the fire changes direction.
