Downtown business and building owners who want to take part in the downtown mural program have a week to nominate their walls.
The deadline for expressions of interest is March 24, which is also the deadline for artist submissions.
“One of the things we learned last year is that there’s tremendous interest among building owners and businesses to have murals on their buildings. Therefore, we wanted to develop a process to have an opportunity to fairly look at the requests and see what the needs of the mural artist are and be able to connect them effectively with our building owners to ensure that this is very much a community development process,” said Bobby-Jo Stannard, the city’s superintendent of community development.

Nine murals will be painted this summer in the historic downtown to add to the 15 completed last summer. Some private businesses have also done murals on their own.
“It has really been a wonderful surprise over the pandemic how the mural conversation has changed the look and feel of downtown,” Stannard said.
She added there was an increase in foot traffic where the murals appeared last summer, and part of the fun was seeing the murals pop up.
The mural project will again culminate with the street festival Meet The Street on the September long weekend.
“We’re really looking forward to having an end of summer celebration,” Stannard said.
“We saw an increase in business definitely during the Meet the Street festival last year, so we know it is a positive influence in the downtown and it’s providing opportunities to think differently about spaces and what art looks like in the city of Red Deer.”
